Honors Program

Enriching the academic experience of highly motivated students

The Honors Program at Illinois State challenges and engages academically talented students with a variety of unique experiences. Honor students enjoy:

  • Individualized attention,
  • Diverse academic and cultural experiences,
  • Scholarly and civic engagement, and
  • Strong connections with each other and faculty.

A special Honors seminar helps new freshmen adjust to college life inside and outside the classroom. You'll get connected with campus resources and meet other new honors students.

Special academic work leading to a student being designated as a Departmental Honors Scholar is available in all academic departments or schools in the University. Honors students have the opportunity to live and learn in a unique environment, the Honors House, where residents value diversity and commitment to education.

Honors student perspective

My favorite project was something I did in my psycho-pharmacology class because it challenged me the most. I did a paper that was very hard for me to write because it wasn’t the easiest subject to grasp. I really had to work hard at it, and that was something that I really enjoyed. I like being challenged.
-Mari Taylor

I developed good relationships with my professors that lead to a research mentorship (a program through the Honor’s program) in my major, and that lead to an independent research study where it was my own research. In the mentorship program I was helping with a professor’s research and learning what that process was about, and as a senior was able to do my own research with their guidance.
-Molly Sherer

I definitely think that I have had that in my college career and have tried to achieve as much as I can while I’ve been here, not always in the classroom but outside the classroom as well. I’m trying to build the most well rounded type of person I could with all the opportunities here at Illinois State. There are definitely those opportunities here.
