Transfer Program Requirements
Some majors and programs require or recommend certain courses. Many also have minimum GPA requirements. Find your desired program below to learn what the requirements are and if you'll be able to meet them by the time you transfer.
We encourage all transfer students to complete the course equivalents of the following courses before they enroll at Illinois State:
- Introductory-level composition (ENG 101),
- Intermediate-level composition (ENG 145),
- Introductory-level speech (COM 110), and
- an IAI-approved math course (non-remedial, transferrable math).
The Illinois Basic Skills Test is encouraged for all students pursuing any type of education major. Passing this exam prior to transferring to Illinois State helps you to be on track in your major.
Transfer students who wish to pursue a major in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) or any bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree should also complete foreign language graduation requirements prior to attending Illinois State. The CAS requirement may be met by: three years of one language in high school OR completion of the second semester (LAN 112) or higher of a college-level foreign language (including American Sign Language) with a grade of C or better. B.A. candidates must successfully complete three semesters (through LAN 115) OR pass a course proficiency test.
Due to space limitations and the competitiveness of the applicant pool, it may not be possible to offer admission to all qualified applicants. Highest admission priority will be granted to transfer students with the strongest academic records. Earning an associate's degree does not guarantee admission.
As you review program requirements, please note:
- The required and recommended courses shown for each program are listed by Illinois State University course number and/or title. The coursework equivalents for your school(s) can be found on our transferring credit page.
- The average admitted profile listed for each program indicates the typical range of students who were admitted to the major, sequence, or program during the last application cycle. The range is intended to give you a better idea of the quality of students recently admitted.
- You may also download this information in our Transfer/Readmit Major Admission Guide (PDF).
- Some majors are highly competitive and we cannot accept all qualified applicants. For a list of currently closed programs, or those not accepting applications for the spring, please download our closed major list.
