Music Education

Illinois State's preferred filing period for fall transfer students is September 1-January 15. For the spring semester, the preferred filing period is from April 1-August 1. You are encouraged to apply early in the preferred filing period for best consideration for admission into competitive majors. Visit the Office of Admissions to apply today.

Applying to the Program

  • Complete your application for admission, including selecting an audition date
  • Refer to the suggested repertoire recommendations for each music studio to prepare for your audition. You may want to also contact the respective applied faculty member for further information about the audition.
  • Please provide a letter of recommendation from a music professional to:

Placement Tests

Upon enrolling at Illinois State, the School of Music requires that transfer students take a placement tests for Music Theory and Group Piano. Contact Janet Tulley for information on these two tests.

Additional Information

The following criteria will be used in determining whether a former Illinois State student will be re-admitted to the music education major:

  1. Successful re-audition or permission of the appropriate applied areas
  2. A 2.5 GPA in the theory/history core and applied music

It is strongly recommended that students meet the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) prior to enrollment. Visit the College of Education's website for details on acceptable ACT or SAT scores which can be used to meet this requirement.
